Learning Gaelic!

Although most of the Irish population no longer speak Gaelic, it is still taught in some schools and can be seen written on signs throughout the country! There are parts of Ireland that still speak strictly Gaelic!! During the last few weeks I’ve picked up a little bit of Gaelic that I’ll share with you:

Cead Mile Failte – A Hundred Thousand Welcomes (Common welcome found through out Ireland at pubs and stores)

Dia Duit – Hello/God be with you (Common greeting)

Pog Mise – Kiss Me

Pog Mo Thoin – Kiss my A*S

Slainte – To Health (Drinking Toast)

Prate – Potato (Stable food)

Stad – Help

Croi Follain agus gob fliuch – A Healthy Heart and a Wet Mouth (Drinking Toast)

Potato Power

I’m sure you’ve all heard the classic stereotypes about Irish people eating potatoes everyday, year round. Well those stereotypes are completely true. According to the Irish, “If and only if potatoes are present on your plate, then you have a proper meal”. In Ireland potatoes are called “Spuds”, which I think is kinda cool. Irish chips are actually American french fries, and American potato chips are called crisps in Ireland. As you can imagine potatoes are being consumed at a tremendous rate. No wonder the Potato Famine was so devastating to the Irish Population!!
